Directions to Lord of The
Rings movie locations at Mavora Lakes,
where six sites were used for filming.
The Mavora Lakes are located just 30 minutes
drive from Beechwood Lodge. If you plan to visit
the
sites on your drive from Queenstown . . .
Approx 1hr 30mins after
leaving Queenstown and 12 kms after passing
through the village of Mossburn via Route 94,
turn right at Mavora Lakes. The
gravel road follows the Oreti River Valley,
39kms/45mins of dusty road, roll up the
windows! (The scenic areas in the movie
don't appear until after you approach the
forest surrounding the Mavora Lakes).
The Orcs were burned
after their epic battle Eomer and
the Riders of Rohan the following directions
will take
you to the film location.
After
driving 35kms from the Hwy, and just prior to
the turn into the Mavora Lakes forest,
you'll see a gateway on your right and a
repaired fence on your left.
On your left is the edge of Fangorn
Forest.
Climb the fence on your
left and walk 250m in a northwesterly
direction. (Up until 2002, there were remains
of the ashes from the burnt Orcs). The
locality is just as you would imagine - a
brown hillock with the edge of the forest
just metres away.
Silverlode: once you
make the turn into Mavora Lakes forest you will
see signs for a suspension bridge.
Park your car at the layby facilities and walk
down to the lakeshore. The bridge spans the
outlet of
South Mavora Lake, this watery junction is
portrayed as the Silverlode.
Sindarin, Lake of Many Mists: continue
in your car towards North Mavora Lake, the
foreshore of this lake
is filmed at the end of the Fellowship's journey.
Opening scenes from The Two Towers the re-appearance
of Gandelf as he calls forth the White Horse are
recognizable in the scenery surrounding the lake.
Merry & Pippin hid from The Orcs behind a
large tree stump, located near the beginning of
North Mavora
Lake, the large tree shielded Frodo from the Uruk-hai. The
slopes here were also used to portray Lurtz
and his band running through the forest.
Frodo & Sam were filmed
running out of the forest at the shore of North
Mavora Lake, near where the
road ends, you will not be able to drive any
further. Here the campfire was lit prior to the
breaking of the
Fellowship and the
subsequent journey to Mordor.
Return trip, head south
from Mavora Lakes, take the right turn at the
'Y' junction if you plan to drive to
Manapouri. If you plan to drive to Queenstown,
take the left turn at the 'Y' junction.
