DIRECTION TO MOVIE SCENE LOCATIONS

MAVORA LAKES / Fangorn Forest & Nen Hithoel. The  following information can be found in Ian Brodie's, LOTR Location Guidebook.

Mavora Lakes are located off Route 94 / Te Anau & Manapouri Highway, road access is a half hour drive from Manapouri/Beechwood Lodge.

DRIVING: Approx 12kms after leaving the village of Mossburn via Route 94 - turn at the sign for Mavora Lakes. The gravel road to the entrance to the lakes follows the Oreti River Valley, 39kms/45mins of dusty road, roll up the windows! The scenic areas in the movie don't appear until after you turn into the forest surrounding the Mavora Lakes.

En Route: The following directions will take you to the film location where Eomer and the Riders of Rohan burnt the remains of the Orcs after their epic battle.

"After driving 35km from the Hwy, and just prior to the turn into the forest surrounding the lakes, you'll see a gateway on your right and a repaired fence on your left. On your left is the edge of Fangorn Forest.

Climb the fence on your left and walk 250m in a northwesterly direction. Up until 2002, there were remains of the ashes from the burnt Orcs. The locality is just as you would imagine - a brown hillock with the edge of the deep forest just metres away."

Once you make the turn into the Beech Forest surrounding the lakes you will see signs for the Suspension Bridge. Park here and walk down to the lakeshore of South Mavora Lake.

The bridge spans the outlet of South Mavora Lake where the lake water flows into the Mararoa River. This watery junction is portrayed as the Silverlode and as the Fellowship left Lothlorien.

Continue on in your car towards North Mavora Lake - Nen Hithoel, Sindarin, Lake of Many Mists. The foreshore of the lake marked the end of the Fellowship's journey down the River Anduin.

As the road passes the south end of North Mavora look for a park bench and a lone toilet. Park here and walk up the slope 150m into the forest.

Look for a large tree stump at the top of the ridge. Here Merry and Pippin hid from the Orcs, and the large tree shielded Frodo from the Uruk-hai.
The slopes here were also used to portray
Lurtz and his band running through the forest to Nen Hithoel.

Go back down to the lakeshore and walk 200m north, to where the campfire was lit prior to the breaking of the Fellowship. It also marks the spot where Frodo and Sam were filmed crossing to the eastern shore for their journey to Mordor.

Opening scenes from 'The Two Towers' the re-appearance of Gandelf as he calls forth the White Horse are recognizable in the scenery surrounding the lakes.

RETURN: Heading south from the lakes take the RIGHT turn at the 'Y' junction - instead of following the Oreti River Road.

This RIGHT turn will bring you back to Route 94/Te Anau Hwy. The turn/sign for Manapouri, leading to Beechwood Lodge, is approx 30mins from the exit road/Mavora Lakes.
