Lake Manapouri is
59 sq. miles in area and 18 miles long. With its
deserted coves, countless islands, and forested
mountain ranges, often snow capped, it has earned
the description the loveliest lake in New
Zealand.
The lake is the deepest of the
southern glacial lakes with a depth of 1,468 ft;
it is 600 ft above sea level which means that the
bed is 870 ft below sea level. Manapouri Map / Fordland National Park

Fiordland
Mountains surround the lake from

Geological
story: The peaks and forest-clad
ridges explain in visual terms how the Fiordland
lakes were formed. Massive sheets of ice moved
through these landmasses, gouging lakes and
ravines.
